Moving to Massachusetts?

Here’s a step-by-step guide to getting great coverage in Mass with no hassle.

In Mass, insurance comes first.

  1. You cannot register a vehicle in Massachusetts without an active Massachusetts policy already in place.

  2. Your out-of-state policy won't transfer. Massachusetts requires its own policy form and its own coverages.

  3. Home and renters coverage has its own Massachusetts quirks. Old housing stock, coastal wind deductibles, and ice dams all affect what a carrier will write and what it costs.

Moving is stressful enough. The insurance part shouldn't be the thing that sends you home from the RMV empty-handed.

If you've moved between states before, you probably expect to register the car first and sort out insurance after. Massachusetts flips that order. Your Registration and Title Application has to be stamped and signed by a licensed Massachusetts insurance agent before the RMV will process it. No stamp, no plates.

This guide from Nobile walks you through the whole process in the order you should actually do it. The car comes first, because that's the part with a deadline attached. The roof over your head comes right after.

Your current out-of-state policy will not work here, even if you've been with the same company for twenty years and never missed a payment. Massachusetts requires its own policy form with its own compulsory coverages.

What you'll need to have handy:

  • Your driver's license (out-of-state is fine at this stage)

  • The VIN, year, make, and model of every vehicle

  • The names, dates of birth, and license numbers of everyone in your household who drives

  • Your new Massachusetts address

  • Your prior insurance information

One thing that catches people: Massachusetts requires you to list every licensed driver living in your household who is related to you by blood, marriage, or adoption, whether or not they drive your car. If your adult son lives with you and has his own policy on his own car, he still generally needs to be listed on yours.

(1) Get a Mass auto policy.

(2) Get your Registration and Title Application (RTA) stamped.

Once your policy is active, your agent completes and stamps the Registration and Title Application (the RMV-1). This is the piece the RMV requires and the piece you cannot get online from an out-of-state carrier.

We do this in the office. If you're working with us, we’ll prepare this for you.

(3) Register and title the vehicle at the RMV.

Bring to an RMV Service Center:

  • Your stamped Registration and Title Application.

  • Proof of ownership. Your out-of-state title, or if a lender holds the title, your current out-of-state registration plus documentation of the lien.

  • Payment for the registration fee, title fee, and sales/use tax if applicable.

New registrations and title transfers have to be done in person. This isn’t something you can do online.

We offer a runner service for a $20 fee. They’ll go to the RMV for you.

(4) Get the vehicle inspected within 7 days.

Every vehicle registered in Massachusetts needs a combined safety and emissions inspection sticker, and newly registered vehicles have to be inspected within 7 days of the registration date.

Inspections happen at licensed stations statewide. If you fail, you have a window to repair and re-inspect.

(5) Transfer your driver's license.

You need to convert your out-of-state license to a Massachusetts license once you establish residency. You can start the application online, but you'll need to finish in person at an RMV Service Center.

Two things worth knowing:

  • Decide whether you want a REAL ID. Since REAL ID enforcement, you need one (or a passport) to board a domestic flight or enter certain federal buildings. Getting it now saves a second trip later.

  • Massachusetts participates in a state-to-state verification service, so your previous state will be notified and that license will be invalidated. You can't hold both.

(6) Cover the roof over your head.

If you bought a home here, your lender required a policy at closing. That doesn't always mean it's the right policy for your situation. Worth a second look once the boxes are unpacked.

If you're renting, renters insurance in Massachusetts is inexpensive, protects your belongings, and is increasingly required in leases.

A few things that surprise people coming from other states:

  • The housing here is old. Massachusetts has some of the oldest housing stock in the country. Knob-and-tube wiring, fuse boxes, older roofs, and underground oil tanks all affect what a carrier is willing to write and what you'll pay. If you're still under agreement, tell us before you close, not after.

  • Coastal properties are their own conversation. Closer to the water, you may see a separate wind or hurricane deductible, and some carriers won't write there at all.

  • Winter does real damage here. Ice dams, frozen pipes, and roof collapse are consistent Massachusetts claims. If you're coming from a warmer state, your deductible and your coverage limits deserve a second look before your first winter.

Either way, bundle it. Most of our carriers offer an Account Credit when you carry auto and home or renters together. For most people moving here, it's the easiest money you'll save.

Why your quote might look different here.

This is the part most people moving to Massachusetts never find out about, and it can cost you money.

Massachusetts rates drivers using the Safe Driver Insurance Plan (SDIP). Clean records earn credits. At-fault accidents and violations add points and surcharges.

Here's the catch for new arrivals. When you move here, you start with zero surcharge points, which is good. But you also aren't automatically eligible for the safe driver discounts, because the system has no Massachusetts driving history for you yet.

You could have twenty spotless years behind the wheel in another state and still land at a standard Massachusetts rate. No surcharge, but no credit either.

The fix is your out-of-state driving record. Your insurer can request your prior state's motor vehicle report and forward it to the Merit Rating Board, where it's used alongside your Massachusetts history to determine your credits. If your record isn't available electronically, you can request an official driving record, or documentation from your previous insurer, and submit it.

That one step is often the difference between a standard rate and an Excellent Driver Discount. It's the first thing we check for anyone moving in from out of state.

Ways to save when you're new here.
