Serious coverage for serious riders.

Full-coverage motorcycle insurance. Only pay for when you actually ride.

Ride protected. Only when you need it.

Insuring your motorcycle is required in Massachusetts if you plan to ride.

Beyond the legal requirement, it’s simply a smart way to protect your bike from repairs and damages.

Finding the right coverage at the right price shouldn't be complicated. At Nobile, we make it easy to get coverage that works for you.

Because riding in New England is highly seasonal, you don't have to pay full price for insurance when your bike is parked for the winter.

You can significantly reduce your premiums during the off-season by reducing coverages:

  1. Remove Road Coverages

When your bike is securely stored in a garage or shed for months at a time, you can temporarily suspend or lower your Collision and Optional Bodily Injury coverages since there is zero risk of an on-road accident.

Already a Nobile client? If you’re not riding, let us know and we can walk you through reducing your coverages.

  2. Keep Comprehensive Coverage

Even when you aren't riding, we recommend that you keep Comprehensive coverage active. This keeps your bike fully protected against non-driving storage risks like fire, structural garage collapses, theft, and vandalism.

Pay less. Rev more.

Save big when you bundle motorcycle with home or renters with Nobile.

The cost of motorcycle insurance

Last updated May 2026

Premium calculations for motorcycle insurance work very similarly to how car insurance is calculated. It’s important to understand what affects the cost so you can get the best price for your needs and for when you actually ride.

Below are some of the most common factors that may impact your premium.

Storage & Garaging Location

  • Where you park your bike overnight has a major sway over your final quote. For instance, registering and storing a motorcycle in a dense urban zone like Boston naturally carries higher premiums than keeping the exact same bike in a quiet suburb like Lynnfield.

Operator Experience

  • The total number of listed riders and their history behind the handlebars directly shapes your costs. Beginners starting out with a baseline SDIP score of 0 face steeper rates due to a lack of road experience. On the flip side, any history of multiple accidents from listed operators will also push premiums upward.

Coverage Limits

  • Choosing lower deductibles and maximizing your liability limits will increase your overall premium. If you’re riding an older bike or something with minor cosmetic wear, raising your comprehensive and collision deductibles is a great way to save. Lowering your overall policy limits will also shrink your regular bill.

Driving Record (SDIP)

  • Your Massachusetts Safe Driver Insurance Plan (SDIP) score is the point value tied to your license. A perfect record earns you an SDIP of 99, while new drivers start at 0. If you’re found at fault in an accident or have traffic violations, your score will drop and your premiums will likely increase. See our full page about how SDIP works in Mass.

Year, Make, Bike Style

  • The specific age, manufacturer, and type of motorcycle heavily dictate your risk profile. Brand new models cost more to replace, and elite or exotic brands generally carry higher premiums. As a rule of thumb, high-value machinery equals higher coverage costs.

Coverages and how they work

Some information sourced from Mass.gov | Last updated May 2026

On every Massachusetts motorcycle policy, some coverages are compulsory and required by the state, while others are optional. Here’s the breakdown.

Compulsory Coverages

  • Bodily Injury to Others protects you, or someone you allow to operate your motorcycle, from legal liability if you accidentally injure or cause the death of someone else while riding. The compulsory limit is $25,000 per person and $50,000 if more than one person is hurt. This coverage is only valid if the accident occurs in Massachusetts and does not cover the injury or death of a passenger on your bike.

  • Bodily Injury Caused by Uninsured Auto protects you, anyone you allow to operate your motorcycle, and household members against losses caused by an uninsured or unidentified ("hit and run") driver. You must carry at least $25,000 per person and $50,000 total for all people injured. Because motorcycle riders don't have PIP to fall back on, unlike car policies, PIP does not apply to motorcycles in Massachusetts. This coverage is one of your most important financial safety nets on the road.

  • Property Damage pays for damage to another person's property when you, a household member, or another rider you allow to operate your motorcycle cause accidental damage. You must purchase a minimum limit of $30,000. At Nobile, we typically recommend $100,000 or higher unless otherwise specified.

Optional Coverages

  • Optional Bodily Injury to Others covers physical injuries suffered by a passenger on your motorcycle.

  • Medical Payments coverage offers additional medical expenses for you, another insured rider, household member, or passenger, regardless of who is at fault. Coverage is available from $5,000 to $25,000. This coverage also pays for funeral services for anyone on your motorcycle at the time of an incident.

  • Collision pays for damages to your motorcycle and does not cover personal property. You can waive the deductible if another driver is found at fault.

  • Limited Collision coverage will apply if you’re equal or less than 50% at fault for an accident. Limited Collision coverage cannot apply in hit-and-run situations. There’s no deductible for Limited Collision.

  • Comprehensive pays for damage to your motorcycle not caused by a collision, including extreme hail, wind, floods, fires, collisions with animals, falling trees or branches, theft, and vandalism. You will need to pay your deductible first. We strongly recommend keeping this active year-round, even during winter storage, since your bike is still exposed to non-riding risks when parked.

  • Accident Forgiveness coverage will protect your premium from increasing after an at-fault accident. The way this coverage is applied is dependent on each carrier.

  • Gap Coverage (Auto Loan/Lease) helps pay off your motorcycle loan if your bike is totaled or stolen and you owe more than its depreciated value.

  • Substitute Transportation (Rental) helps pay for a rental vehicle while your motorcycle is being repaired following a collision or comprehensive claim.

  • Towing and Labor helps pay for towing services and labor when your bike breaks down.

  • There are a few solid ways to bring your premium down. First, ask us about discounts — our carriers typically offer savings for things like paying your policy in full, bundling with home or renters, good driving history, and completing a rider safety course.

You can also adjust your deductible amounts or coverage limits to reduce your regular bill.

One of the biggest opportunities for motorcycle riders specifically is reducing your coverages during the off-season. When your bike is stored for the winter, you can temporarily suspend or lower your Collision and Optional Bodily Injury coverages since there's no on-road risk.

We always recommend keeping Comprehensive active year-round since it protects your parked bike against theft, vandalism, fire, and structural damage even when you're not riding.

Already a Nobile client? Let us know when you're done for the season and we'll walk you through it.

  • No. According to the Massachusetts Division of Insurance, insurance companies are not required to provide PIP coverage on motorcycle policies.

This means if you're injured in an accident, your health insurance is your first line of defense for medical bills.

You can add Medical Payments coverage to your motorcycle policy as a substitute. This coverage steps in to address medical bills for you or a passenger if an accident occurs, regardless of fault.

We’d recommend it for any rider who doesn't want to be left exposed. Ask us about adding it when you get a quote.

  • You'll need at minimum a valid learner's permit before registering and insuring your bike. To get a full Class M license, you'll need to complete the Massachusetts Rider Education Program (MREP) or an approved Motorcycle Safety Foundation course. Completing a rider safety course can also qualify you for a discount on your premium — ask us about it when you get a quote.

  • That's where your Uninsured Motorist coverage steps in. Massachusetts requires you to carry at least $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident in uninsured motorist coverage on your motorcycle policy. Since motorcycle riders don't have PIP to fall back on, this coverage is especially important, and it's one of your main safety nets if the at-fault driver can't pay.

  • Standard policies typically cover your bike at its stock value, meaning custom parts, aftermarket exhaust, upgraded wheels, or other modifications may not be fully covered without an endorsement.

If you've invested in customizations, let us know, we can make sure your policy actually reflects what your bike is worth.
