Here's exactly what to do, step-by-step, after selling your car in Massachusetts.
(1) Cancel your registration with the RMV.
You can cancel your registration (license plates) online through the MyRMV portal.
You'll need your license plate number, email address, driver's license or ID number, and the last four digits of your Social Security Number.
Single-owner vehicles can be canceled entirely online. If the vehicle has two registered owners, both must complete and sign the Affidavit for Cancellation of Registration.
Important to note: Your plates need to be canceled with the RMV before we can cancel your policy or remove the vehicle.

(2) Download your Registration Cancellation Receipt.
Once completed, your registration will be officially canceled and you'll be able to print your Registration Cancellation Receipt.
Save this. You'll need it. Sending your Registration Cancellation Receipt to your agent helps ensure your policy is updated promptly and that any unearned premium is processed correctly.
(3) Destroy or recycle your plates.
Once your registration is canceled, you can recycle or destroy your license plates. Plates can be cut in half and discarded, or you can recycle destroyed plates if your town accepts them at the local recycling center. The plates stay with you, not the buyer.
(4) Contact Nobile.
Once your plates are canceled and you have your receipt, reach out and we'll handle the rest.
We'll either remove the vehicle from your policy or cancel it entirely depending on your situation.
We can't process either until we have the Registration Cancellation Receipt, so make sure you have that ready.
