Got a cancellation notice on your car insurance?
Here's what to do before the RMV revokes your registration.
(1) Find the effective date on the notice.
Your insurance carrier has to send you written notice at least 20 days before a cancellation takes effect. The notice will list the effective date of the cancellation.
Important to note: the RMV revokes your registration and plates on that effective date, not after it. There's no grace period once the date passes.
(2) Check your policy’s cancellation reason.
The notice will state the reason. Most cancellations are for non-payment, and in that case the notice also has to tell you the exact amount owed.
This determines your options. A cancellation for non-payment can often be stopped by paying the balance.
Other reasons may require a new policy.

(3) Take action before the effective date.
Doing either one of these stops the revocation. You’ll have to take action before the date on your notice.
Reinstate with your current company. If it's non-payment, pay what's owed and have the policy reinstated. Your carrier reports the reinstatement to the RMV.
Get a policy from another company. The new company has to notify the RMV before the cancellation date.
If neither happens, your registration is revoked on the effective date.
(4) Contact us before the deadline.
If you need a new policy, don't wait until the last day. Your new carrier has to report the coverage to the RMV before the cancellation takes effect, and that takes time to process.

Your cancellation notice
The vehicle identification number (VIN)
Year, make, and model
Your driver's license number
Your license plate number
