5 Ways to Lower the Bill

(1) Qualify for student discounts.
A big advantage of working with an independent agency like Nobile is that we’ll help you take full advantage of every student discount available to you.

(3) Bundle your policies.
Adding a teen driver is one of the most common reasons families see their premium increase. It's also one of the best times to take a step back and look at your full insurance picture.
If your auto and home (or auto and renters) policies aren't already with the same carrier, bundling them now could offset a meaningful portion of what you'd pay for adding your teen.
Most of our carriers offer an Account Credit for policyholders who bundle, and that discount applies to the whole policy, not just the new driver.
If you're already a Nobile client, reach out and we'll take a look at what you have and where there's room to save.
(4) Raise your deductible.
When a teen is added to your policy, your premium goes up, but your deductible is a lever most families forget to pull. A higher deductible means you take on more out-of-pocket cost in the event of a claim, and in exchange, your carrier lowers your monthly premium.
If your teen is driving an older or lower-value vehicle, this trade-off often makes sense. The car may not warrant the same level of coverage as a newer one, and the premium savings over time can outweigh the added risk of a higher deductible.
It's worth having the conversation when you add your teen. We'll look at the numbers with you and help you decide if adjusting your deductible is the right move for your situation.
(5) Ask for an operator exclusion.
If your teen isn't driving at all, you may be able to exclude them from your policy entirely through an operator exclusion form. This goes further than the Student Away discount and can result in more significant savings.
The trade-off is important to understand. If an excluded operator ever drives a covered vehicle and is involved in an accident, your policy will not cover that incident. This is a decision that should be made carefully and with full awareness of the risk.
It's not the right move for every family, but for the right situation it can make a real difference on your premium. Reach out and we'll walk you through whether it makes sense for you.

"I've been a loyal customer of Nobile Insurance Agency for over 40 years, and that alone says a lot. Whether it's home, auto, or any other coverage, they've always made the process clear and easy. It's rare these days to find a company that still values long-term relationships, and Nobile absolutely does.

Teen Driving FAQs
-
For Mapfre policyholders: This discount program is only available to Massachusetts customers who became policyholders prior to April 19, 2024.
teenSMART® is a safety training program designed to reduce crash risk for new drivers. Your teen completes about 4 to 6 hours of computer-based training paired with parent-teen exercises and in-car practice.
Several Massachusetts carriers offer a discount on your auto premium once your teen completes the program, with savings varying by company (some up to 15 to 20%).
The discount typically stays on the policy until your teen turns 21, so completing it early in their driving years gives you the longest payoff.
-
Snapshot® is Progressive's usage-based insurance program. After you enroll, your driving is monitored through the Progressive mobile app or a plug-in device for a set period (usually 6 months), tracking things like hard braking, miles driven, time of day, and phone use.
Safe drivers can earn meaningful discounts at renewal, while consistently risky driving can actually raise your rate. For teen drivers, it's a way to build a personalized rate based on actual habits rather than just age and demographics, which can be a significant edge for responsible new drivers.
-
In Control is a hands-on crash prevention training course taught at a closed facility in Weymouth, Massachusetts. It runs about 4.5 hours and combines classroom instruction with real driving exercises like emergency braking and skid recovery, skills you cannot safely practice on public roads.
For Vermont Mutual policyholders: You can reserve a course online or call 888-301-SAFE. Enter code “VermontMutual" in the discount code section of the payment screen or mention the code if you register by phone.
For Mapfre policyholders: Learn more about the In Control Course here.

Yes, but in most cases your teen is already covered. Massachusetts law prohibits anyone from driving without insurance, including permit holders.
The good news is that if your teen is practicing in your insured vehicle under your supervision, they're typically treated as a permissive user under your existing policy at no added cost. You're not legally required to add them until they earn their actual driver's license, but it's worth letting us know when they get their permit so we can confirm your specific carrier's rules and flag any coverage gaps before they start driving regularly.

A perfect SDIP rating in Massachusetts is 99, which qualifies you for the Excellent Driver Discount Plus (the largest credit available on your auto premium).
To earn it, you need to be licensed for 6 years with zero surchargeable incidents (at-fault accidents or moving violations). New drivers start at 0 points and work their way up to 99 simply by driving safely over time. There's no shortcut, just patience and good habits.
-
That depends on your situation, and it's exactly the kind of question we're built to answer.
As an independent agency, Nobile partners with multiple top-rated Massachusetts carriers including Mapfre, Progressive, and others.
The right fit comes down to factors like your teen's age, the vehicle they drive, the discounts each carrier offers, and how each company's pricing model treats young drivers.
Rather than guessing, we'll shop the options for you and walk you through what each one looks like for your family.

Unfortunately, Massachusetts JOL law does not make a work exception for the 12:30 AM to 5:00 AM curfew.
The only legal exceptions are being accompanied by a parent or legal guardian, or being an emancipated minor. If your teen has work hours that conflict with curfew, the safest options are arranging a ride from a parent or coworker, scheduling around the restriction, or waiting until they turn 18 when the curfew lifts. Driving during curfew is treated as operating without a license in Massachusetts, which carries a 60-day suspension, a $100 reinstatement fee for a first offense, and the possibility of arrest.
-
Yes. Immediate family members are exempt from the JOL passenger restriction, so siblings can ride with your teen even during the first 6 months of their JOL when other under-18 passengers are off limits. One important caveat: the exemption stops at immediate family. Friends, classmates, and neighbors are not allowed in the car during that 6-month window unless a licensed adult age 21 or older is in the front passenger seat. Even carpools, prom drop-offs, and school activity rides are off limits if friends are involved.
