How billing works
Billing options vary by carrier, but most accept payment by paper bills, paperless billing, or EFT (electronic funds transfer). EFT is often a 12-month plan you can set up when starting a policy or later if your account’s current. You can also choose a 1-Pay option, as some carriers offer a paid-in-full discount, and even without this discount, you’ll avoid installment fees. Depending on your policy, installment plans may include 2-, 4-, 10-, or 11-pay schedules.
How to pay your bill in 3 steps
Choose your payment method. Online, by phone, or by mail.
Have your policy info ready. Your name, your carrier, policy number, and payment details.
Submit and confirm. Keep a copy of your confirmation for your records.
Changing your payment method
You can usually update your billing type and payment method anytime. You’ll need to reach out to your carrier or use their online tools.
Most common payment methods
- Pay online through your carrier’s secure portal
- Set up automatic payments from your bank account
- Pay by phone with a credit or debit card
- Mail a check or money order directly to your carrier
Missing a payment
If you miss a payment, your carrier will usually send a legal cancellation notice. You’re not just canceled on the spot. This notice gives you a set number of days to make the payment before the date shown. If you receive one, the best move is to call our office so we can process a payment for you immediately. You can also pay online through our Manage Policy page or by contacting your carrier directly. We don’t recommend mailing a check, since it may not arrive in time and you don’t want to risk a lapse in coverage.
For commercial policies, we’re often unable to process payments on your behalf. In those cases, you’ll need to pay directly through the carrier or via their website. You can find more details on our Manage Policy page.
If you’re ever unsure of what to do, just contact us and we’ll point you in the right direction.
